7 Best Things About Going Home For Semester Break

It’s that time of the year again:  the end of the semester.  After weeks of classes, essays, and exams, college students are finally heading home for the holidays.  These are the seven greatest things about coming home for semester break.

1. No classes.

You don’t have to set an alarm for the morning!  That’s wonderful enough.  But you also don’t have to get up and walk across campus for your eight o’clock class.  You can stay in bed all morning, with visions of lecturing professors far from your head.

2. No homework.

When you come home at the end of the day, you can just relax.  Say goodbye to staying up until four A.M. finishing your homework.  Your time is yours to do whatever you please!  You don’t have to see the library for weeks if you don’t want to.

3. Showering in peace.

Honestly, this is my absolute favorite thing about coming home.  College showers are just not ideal.  You have to wear flip-flops, someone’s waiting for you to finish so they can get in, and the water is either freezing cold or unbearably hot.  Showering at home is something I no longer take for granted.

4. Seeing your family.

Don’t lie – you definitely started to miss your parents toward the end of the semester.  It’s a treat to come home and be surrounded by loved ones.  This time of year also brings back lots of family traditions.  Every Christmas Eve, my family gathers to watch It’s A Wonderful Life.  It’s something I look forward to each year.

5. Reuniting with your friends.

You probably already saw your buds over Thanksgiving break.  But that was only for a few days.  Semester breaks are several weeks long, which means more time for your crew to hang out.  And if your breaks come at different times than your friends, you can visit each other at school!

6. Eating a lot.

Depending on your meal plan, you might not be able to eat as much as you want to.  Or, your cafeteria food just doesn’t do the trick for you.  Being at home remedies any food trouble you’ve been having.  Your parent’s best recipes, home-cooked meals, and a twenty-four-hour kitchen await you.

7. Having a room to yourself.

Don’t get me wrong – I love my roommate.  But there’s something special about coming home to your room.  After all, you lived there for years before you moved into your college dorm.  And without a roommate there, you can do almost anything you want:  play music, keep the lights on late, sing terribly . . . you don’t even have to wear pants!

No matter how old I get, I’ll always love coming home for the holidays.  At this point, there are only a couple weeks left until the semester ends.  I’ll be counting down the days!
