Jobs. We all have to have them eventually. And as unfortunate as it may sound, we all get turned down for one at some point. Hopefully, it wasn’t your dream job ,because that is harder to move on from. But if it was your dream job (or you still just feel super downtrodden), here are some tips to mourn and carry on:
1. Have a glass of wine or take a shot.
This will knock the edge off a little and make it a little easier to take the news. If you don’t like to drink or can’t, ice cream is always a great way to go. If you can’t decide, try some wine ice cream.
2. Allow yourself to cry.
If this was a big job, then it’s okay to cry with the loss of that possibility.
3. Close the email.
More than likely, the rejection came via email. Don’t torture yourself by staring at it. That won’t change their decision and it won’t make you feel better either.
4. Go to sleep.
It sounds dumb, but sleeping and then waking up to a new day will make you feel like there are new possibilities.
5. Realize that if they rejected you now, it doesn’t mean they will reject you in the future.
A lot of the time they reject you because you lack of experience. If that’s the case, try to get some. If you want to be a writer that works at a magazine company, maybe try to do an internship or fellowship to build up your portfolio. If you are looking at another field, try to get a job with another company that does close to the same thing. They want to know you can do the work, so show them that you can!
6. Send a thank-you note.
You always want to send a thank-you note if you got an interview with someone. It shows that you really appreciate the opportunity to interview with them, and it’s also a very professional thing to do. Also, it might make you stand out and stick in their brain in case you decide to apply again at a later date.
7. Look for other jobs.
It’s time to go out and get another job. If you get rejected again, repeat steps 1-6. Hopefully, you land this one, and it turns out to be a better fit than the dream job you applied for in the first place.
Good luck and happy hunting!
